Portland Metro Friday Weather: Freezing rain expected through afternoon

Freezing rain that caused multiple freeway crashes early Friday morning will continue through at least the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The icy road surfaces are worst in the Portland metro area. With road surfaces at freezing, any rain that falls is turning to ice. NWS expects the freezing rain to retreat to areas east of Interstate 205 by afternoon.

Freezing rain will continue in the Columbia River and upper Hood River Valley into Saturday morning.  Freezing rain is also being reported in Salem and Eugene and a freezing rain advisory is in effect for the central and south Willamette Valleys through Friday morning.

Due to surface temperature variations, some areas are seeing only rain, or ice forming only on elevated surfaces. Temperatures are in the low 30s for most of Portland and low-to-mid 30s for Salem and Eugene. The forecast high temp for Portland Friday is 36.

Once this cold air moves out the rain returns for the weekend with highs in the low-to-mid 40s for both Saturday and Sunday. Both days look very wet with steady rain forecasted through the weekend.
