RENSSELAER -- Officers arrested a suspect in a Virginia homicide Monday night after chasing the man through the city, police said.

Officers stopped a 2009 Ford sedan on Washington Avenue for going 56 mph in a 30 mph zone at 10:52 p.m., and discovered 24-year-old driver Demetrius M. William was wanted in Richmond, Va., on a murder charge, Rensselaer police said.

When officers ordered Demetrius to get out the car, he refused and drove off, police said. Demetrius led city officers and State Police on a short chase into North Greenbush, where he crashed into a curb near the intersection of Route 4 and 43, police said.

Demetrius was arrested and is being held pending arraignment on the homicide warrant. Rensselaer police have charged him with eleven additional charges.

Demetrius faces five local misdemeanor charges, drunken driving, fleeing a police officer, obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest and criminal tampering. He was ticketed for five violations: speeding, not wearing a seat belt, aggravated unlicensed operator, unlicensed driver and unlawful possession of marihuana.
