Teen charged in connection with attack that seriously injured South Elgin student

A 14-year-old faces aggravated battery and battery charges in connection to an attack at Kenyon Woods Middle School which severely injured a classmate.

The teen appeared in the juvenile courtroom of Kane County Judge Clint Hull Tuesday morning. Accompanied by his parents, the teen spoke only to offer one-word answers to questions about whether he understood the charges and his rights. His father whispered to him and patted his back at times during the hearing.

Hull placed the teen on electronic home monitoring.

"You have to stay in the house," Hull said before setting an April 4 court date.

Prosecutors did not offer details into the charges, but the teen's public defender agreed that there was probable cause for the case to go forward.

The teen, who is now attending a different school, and his parents did not comment as they exited the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

"Stay over there," the teen's father said to TV cameras.

School District U46 officials have said 12-year-old Henry Sembdner was injured during a brief Feb. 3 incident at the South Eglin school. Sembdner suffered injuries that required hospitalization.

Sembdner's family recently filed a petition in Kane County Circuit Court requesting more information and records from District U46 on what transpired in the hallways of Kenyon Woods on that Friday.

According to the petition, they want the district to disclose electronically stored information, documents, records, memos, video, photos and other items regarding the attack and the attacker.

According to the petition, another student picked up Henry and "immobilized him in such a manner that he could not escape."

The student then, "savagely attacked him by throwing him to the ground headfirst and/or striking him in the face and head," according to the petition.
