Trump declares ‘major disaster’ in storm-ravaged California

President Donald Trump opened the door on Tuesday for California to receive federal funding after severe winter storms caused widespread damage last month in parts of Northern California.

“The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of California and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State, tribal, and local recovery efforts,” the White House said in a statement.

The declaration unlocks federal funds to support areas severely impacted by flooding and mudslides between Jan. 3 and Jan. 12, the White House added.

Eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations can receive funds on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the storms.

Among the affected counties are Alameda, Contra Costa, Humboldt, Marin, Mendocino, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Shasta.
