Amid concerns about President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration, representatives for local minority groups will meet Tuesday with two of Central Florida’s freshly elected members of Congress.
U.S. Rep. Val Demings plans to host a discussion with Muslim leaders at 4 p.m. in MetroWest, following up on a previous discussion last month about Trump’s attempt to institute a travel ban for seven Muslim-majority countries.
Later in the day, U.S Rep. Darren Soto’s district office in Kissimmee will host a representative of the Mexican consulate and the founder of the Farmworkers Association of Florida, to discuss increased U.S. Immigrations and Customs raids under Trump.
The meetings come as details of Trump’s immigration enforcement plan continue to emerge, including reports that his administration will ramp up and expedite deportations, targeting for removal any undocumented immigrants convicted of criminal offenses.
Trump’s administration also is reportedly drafting a revised executive order barring travel to the United States by most citizens of of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, after a previous version was suspended by a federal judge in Seattle.
