Video shows deputies rescuing men from Lake Harney after boat capsizes

Video from a Seminole County sheriff’s helicopter shows the moments rescuers saved two men found clinging to their capsized boat in the middle of Lake Harney.

One of the men managed to call 911 about 11:15 a.m. Monday saying he and a friend were in the water, holding on to the sinking boat, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

He told the dispatcher their boat suddenly started taking on water and “within 10 minutes” had overturned.

A sheriff’s helicopter quickly spotted the men in the middle of the lake. Video shows them struggling to hold on to the hull of the upside down boat as waves washed over them.

Officials said the helicopter crew dropped yellow emergency inflatables to help the men stay afloat. They then directed a Seminole County Fire Rescue team to their location, where they pulled the men into a rescue boat and took them safely back to shore, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies didn’t say what type of boat the men were in, or what caused it to take on water. Lake Harney straddles the Seminole-Volusia County Line, just east of Geneva.
