The 2017 Super Bowl — Number LI for you Roman numeral fans — gets underway Sunday, Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston Texas with the NFC champion Atlanta Falcons facing the AFC champion New England Patriots.
Super Bowl LI is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time (6:30 p.m. Eastern) on the Fox network — Channel 11 in the Los Angeles television market.
The Super Bowl is a unique media event — and prime marketing platform — because just as many viewers come to watch the commercials as the game itself.
Companies large and larger use the NFL championship game as a showcase for new and creative ads — and they pay a mighty price to reach an audience that in 2016’s Super Bowl 50 averaged 111.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
The ratings tracking company says 167 million watched at least 6 minutes of the 2016 telecast, and viewership peaked at 115.5 million for the halftime show.
And speaking of halftime, the 2017 show features Lady Gaga, with speculation ramping up about what she will wear and do at the marquee event.
In addition to the Fox network, this year’s Super Bowl will be available free to Roku, Xbox One, Amazon Fire TV, Windows and Android TV users via two apps that normally require subscriptions but will be password-free during the big game, Wired.com reports.
To watch the game on those devices, download the Fox Sports Go or NFL apps.
The game will also be available via the Fox Sports Go app on iOS and Android devices using Wi-Fi. According to Wired, Verizon Wireless customers can watch the game on their devices via the cellular network.
For laptop and desktop computers, Fox Sports is offering a live stream.
If you want to listen to Super Bowl LI on the radio, the Westwood One network is carrying the game. A complete list of stations can be found here. In the Los Angeles market, stations are KLAC-AM (570), KIEB-AM (1150) and KNX-AM (1070). In Riverside, the game will be on KTDD-AM (1350), and in Ventura it will be on KVEN-AM (1450).
