After a report early today about a person with a “long rifle” on a Simi Valley high school campus led to a morning-long lockdown, police determined that a ceremonial drill rifle was mistaken for a real firearm.

Simi Valley Police said they received a report of a person with a weapon walking onto the Royal High School campus about 8:21 a.m.

The campuses of Royal High and Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School were locked down as a precaution, police said.

Officers searched the Royal High campus for a possible gunman with the help of a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter, said Simi Valley police.

As the morning wore on, police determining that the weapon seen was in fact a ceremonial drill rifle used by a member of the drill team and not a real gun.

During the search, police closed Royal Avenue to traffic between Crocker and Pride streets.

Police announced that the search was over and the weapon was a fake at 12:19 p.m.

Simi Valley officers were remaining on scene to assist with any traffic impacts resulting from the lockdown and search.
