2 women killed, 2 men critically injured in crash on 101 Freeway

STUDIO CITY >> Two women were killed and two men were hurt as a minivan hurtled through a concrete bridge railing, vaulted over five freeway lanes, and landed on the southbound 101 Freeway in the Cahuenga Pass, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The minivan crossed over all five northbound lanes of the 101, clipped the center concrete median and landed in the southbound lanes, where it was hit hard by a southbound sedan. Its driver was also hurt.

The crash was at about 7:20 p.m. Saturday as the 2017 Toyota Sienna barreled down the hill on Barham Boulevard and crashed at the traffic light at the freeway frontage road, now called W.C. Fields Drive. Video showed that a portion of the 80-year-old bridge’s antique cathedral-style concrete railing was broken where the van went through it.

Officer Mike Lopez at the LAPD’s Media Relations Section said the minivan also struck a traffic sign and a chain link fence before it flew over the 101’s northbound lanes, about 25 feet below.

As it came to a stop, a southbound 2009 Kia on the freeway smashed into the wreckage. Video showed that it was destroyed, but its driver escaped the crash minor injuries, Lopez said.

The two women in the minivan were killed on impact, said Lopez.

Detectives from the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (818) 644-8115.
