Another senior living option coming to Gurnee

Gurnee is expected to add to its housing stock what will be at least its sixth senior-living facility in the coming months.

Village board members recently approved a special-use permit to allow conversion of a former day-care center at 5631 Manchester Drive into the Gurnee Manor assisted-living operation. The property is just north of the HeatherRidge condominium development and golf course.

Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik said the latest senior-living plan for the village's southern end is part of a desire to offer residents a chance to "age in place."

"It's a nice reuse of the building, a quiet area, easy access," she added.

Plans submitted to the village by RobMax LLC show an eight-bedroom, assisted-living facility for seniors. Each unit will have a private bathroom for residents needing help to shower, dress themselves or complete other daily living basics.

RobMax's Gabriel Bershadsky told the village board at a recent meeting that the facility will have 24-hour-a-day caregivers. A registered nurse will be on site about four hours a day to dispense medication and provide for other needs of residents, expected to be 65 and older, he said.

Gurnee has developed a senior living corridor of sorts on Hunt Club Road near Washington Street, a few miles west of the RobMax site.

Autumn Leaves, an assisted living facility catering to clients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, sits adjacent to the Thomas Place of Gurnee complex for residents 55 and older, in what's billed as a senior independent-living facility. Autumn Leaves and Thomas Place share an access drive off Hunt Club Road.

Sunrise of Gurnee, an assisted-living center for seniors, is near Thomas Place and the Autumn Leaves property, while Theresa's Home Care assisted-living facility operates in a 6,000-square-foot, single-family house on Cunningham Court near Hunt Club Road.

Heritage Woods of Gurnee is another assisted-living operation on Gurnee's east side. The three-story building is near Grand Avenue and Route 41.
