Don’t tear up NAFTA, says U.S. Chamber of Commerce head | Toronto Star

OTTAWA—The head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says tearing up the North American Free Trade Agreement will mean lost jobs in all three countries.

Tom Donahue is delivering that message to a business luncheon gathering.

Donahue tells the Economic Club of Canada that he is to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and some of his advisers later today.

He says there are ways to improve the 23-year-old trade deal among Canada, Mexico and the United States and there’s potential to create a stronger agreement that will improve North America’s overall competitiveness with the rest of the world.

U.S. president Donald Trump has threatened to abandon NAFTA if it can’t be renegotiated to his satisfaction.

Donahue says the first priority on NAFTA is to “do no harm” to an already strong and integrated trading relationship.

He also says NAFTA’s visa provisions need to be upgraded to allow more movement for skilled workers.
