Nina Grunenberg: Uncomfortable, but never unfair

She was one of formative journalists of time. Since 1965, Nina Grunenberg has belonged to editorial department, before she had written for paper from Cologne. She made a name for herself as a political reporter and author of great portraits. She wrote about leading politicians of Federal Republic, about Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl and – again and again – about Franz Josef Strauss. "The Last of Olympians" was line above her obituary 1988 to Bavarian Minister president. The CSU at all: it became a topic which she accompanied for many years with journalistic passion.

In numerous series, Nina Grunenberg has analyzed and described functional elites of Republic. The bosses were called a series about company leaders of Alfred Herrhausen ("With fluidity of Conqueror") until Edzard Reuter ("Who does not design, loses"). Portrait series about Germany's diplomats, about generals of Bundeswehr, leading trade unionists and newspaper publishers of today joined.

Nina Grunenberg was a political head through and through – and that was not limited to issues on doorstep. She pursued what had developed and changed elsewhere, in France, in Turkey or in Japan. Their interest was equal to that of politics and science. Early on, she wrote about education and university issues. From 1992 to 1994, she headed newly created Department of Knowledge in time. She was first journalist to belong to Council from 2000 to 2009.

Nina Grunenberg was one of few women who took a leading position in German journalism and became a model for many colleagues.

She hung on time, at time-family. And hand has much to thank her. How few has sharpened profile of sheet. Their political judgement could be uncomfortable, unjust it was never. She set strict standards on her own work and called on ors to do so. She consistently promoted young talents in paper and brought ambitious authors at moment.

Many at spear, she became a good friend. Even after she left editorial office, she looked at us, inquired about well-being of colleagues and hand, made no secret of it, if she did not agree with an innovation. She remained connected to us, in a more awake, friendly, affectionate affection.
