RELEASE: The NDC Partnership helps countries seize the opportunities offered by the water-climate nexus

NEW YORK, March 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- As world leaders gather in New York today for the United Nations 2023 Water Conference, the NDC Partnership is stepping up its support for countries to put water at the center of national economic policies and international decision-making.

"Increasingly, water is a stumbling block to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals," said the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Liesje Schreinemacher. "We want to make water the engine to achieve our ambitions for climate, diversity, equity and prosperity. To do this, we must marshal our resources locally and globally. This means changing our approach in two fundamental ways. First, we have We need to change the approach to water governance and apply a Water Nexus approach Second, we need to value water for its economic value and broader ecosystem benefits Countries' climate commitments, or Level Determined Contributions (NDC), are critical to the success of this approach."

We must answer the call to action from the Global Commission on the Economics of Water that "the world will fail on climate and development if it fails on water." Supporting climate change adaptation and mitigation measures is one way to achieve development, climate and biodiversity goals. The Association supports countries to take climate action, decreasing their water-related climate vulnerability and increasing public and private investment in water-related opportunities. Currently, 90% of countries' NDCs prioritize action on water for adaptation and almost all National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) include water and sanitation as a priority sector (UNEP 2022). However, implementation is delayed and funding is insufficient to ensure that these targets are met.

Building on the momentum of the conference, with initial financial support from the Netherlands of €5 million, the NDC Partnership will provide technical assistance to countries to improve the integration of water in the formulation, updating, financing and implementation of their NDCs. Specifically, the Partnership will guide countries on opportunities to strengthen the implementation of NDCs through an approach based on the water-climate nexus.

"With initial support from the Netherlands, the NDC Partnership will help countries seize the opportunities offered by the water nexus. We welcome the creativity of our partners, such as IFAD, in exploring how we can work together effectively on this issue, and we call on all Partnership participants to make a similar contribution to putting water at the center of economic policy-making," said Minister Schreinemacher.
