LONDON, Jan. 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's leading mining and metals companies today pledged to take urgent action to support a nature-positive future by 2030[1] that promotes health, diversity and resilience of species, ecosystems and natural processes. As responsibly produced minerals and metals play a critical role in advancing global sustainable development goals, ICMM members, representing a third of the global industry, have pledged that meeting this demand for critical materials should not be done by expense of nature.
Comprised of experts and leaders from a variety of disciplines from across ICMM's businesses and association members, as well as from civil society, academia, indigenous representatives and outreach bodies and investors, ICMM's new commitments set out a plan five points for nature:
These commitments apply to activities in the four kingdoms of nature (land, freshwater, oceans and atmosphere), leveraging companies' areas of influence, from their direct operations, value chains and broader landscapes, to the creation of the necessary conditions to achieve the transformation of systems. They are supported by transparent disclosures on performance results, including publishing the results of nature-related impact and dependency assessments, and setting targets to address them.
Rohitesh Dhawan, Chairman and CEO, ICMM today announced the commitments to nature at a Nature Positive Initiative event in Davos, commenting: "The mining industry owes its existence to nature. At a time when the health of our natural world is in danger, but demand for critical minerals is about to skyrocket, we have committed to taking meaningful collective action to help create a positive future for nature. These commitments are based on the important goals and individual actions of members of the ICMM for several decades, including habitat conservation, species protection, and landscape restoration.
There is no escaping the fact that the act of mining directly affects nature, which is why the cornerstone of our commitments is to ensure at least no net loss of biodiversity across all mining sites through closure to a baseline. 2020. ICMM members have already implemented a number of initiatives focused on conservation and restoration, for example strengthening the protection of areas of high biodiversity value, developing innovative technologies to improve seed yields during landscape revegetation, and defending habitats. important invasive species. Commitments on direct operations, value chain and governance and transparency apply to all members, and individual members will select at least one of three commitment options related to broader landscapes and systems transformation, in order to maximize their contribution positive.
These commitments were published as part of a position statement that sets out ICMM members' approach to contributing to a positive future for nature guided by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and ICMM's existing commitments in relationship with protected areas, indigenous peoples, water and respect for human rights according to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP). Action on nature is an integral part of the ICMM Mining Principles, and represents the comprehensive commitment of our member companies to a responsible mining and metals industry.
