Anne, CBC-TV’s update of Anne of Green Gables, has a premiere date.

The drama, executive-produced by Miranda de Pencier (Beginners) and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad, Flesh & Bone), will debut with a two-hour premiere March 19 at 8 p.m., followed by six hour-long broadcasts Sundays at 8 p.m. on CBC.

The series is set in Prince Edward Island in the late 1890s, like the original Lucy Maud Montgomery novel it is based on, but reflects “timeless and topical issues including themes of identity, feminism, bullying and prejudice,” CBC said in a news release.

Anne stars Irish Canadian actress Amybeth McNulty (Morgan, Agatha Raisin) as orphaned girl Anne Shirley; and English actress Geraldine James (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and prolific Canadian actor R.H. Thomson as Marilla and Matthew, the brother and sister who adopt her.

Other cast members include veteran Shaw Festival actress Corrine Koslo as nosy neighbour Rachel Lynde, Montreal native Dalila Bela (Odd Squad) as Anne’s best friend, Diana Barry, and Chicago native Lucas Jade Zumann (Sense8, Chicago Fire) as Anne’s school rival Gilbert Blythe.
