PetSmart recalls batch of canned dog food

PetSmart is recalling one production lot of its Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food out of concern that metal contamination could potentially be a choking hazard to dogs.

The recall was announced late Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

PetSmart announced the recall after learning about the problem from the manufacturer, which had received consumer complaints. PetSmart itself had not received any complaints, nor have there been any reports of illness or injury.

The canned dog food was sold on PetSmart.com, Pet360.com, PetFoodDirect.com and in nationwide PetSmart retail stores. The retailer has dozens of stores in New Jersey.

(USFDA)

The recalled products include the following Grreat Choice dog food sold between Oct. 10, 2016 and Feb. 7, 2017, according to the company.

The recalled product is Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken & Rice Classic Ground. It's in 13.2 oz. cans, with a "Best By" date of 8/5/19/. That number is found on the bottom of the can. The Lot number is 1759338.

No other Grreat Choice products are impacted by this issue, the company said.

Customers who purchased the recalled food should stop feeding it to their pets and bring any remaining cans to their local PetSmart store for a full refund or exchange. For more information about the voluntary recall or if customers have any questions, contact PetSmart Customer Service at 1-888-839-9638.

The FDA regulates food for animals in much the same way it regulates food for humans. It must be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and truthfully labeled.
