Boulder County DA warns residents of overpriced deed service

The Boulder County District Attorney's Office says residents have been reporting that they are receiving letters from a company offering to sell them copies of their property deeds for $89.

Property owners are being advised that they can obtain copies of their deeds from Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's Office for about $5, according to a news release.

Letters that homeowners have reported to the Community Protection Division at the DA's Office contain disclaimers that the company sending the letter is not involved with any government agency, the letters contain wording such as "Boulder Public Information" and "Local Records" that can be confusing.

"This solicitation is somewhat similar to the letters we regularly see where residents are encouraged to insure the pipeline running under their property," District Attorney Stan Garnett said in a release.

"Although there is nothing in the letters that we view as fraudulent, residents should know that it is much more economical to get their deed directly from the Recorder if they want a copy," Garnett said.

Residents can contact the Community Protection Division at 303-441-3700 or fill out a contact form online. Information about how to obtain copies of a deed can also be found on the clerk and recorder's website.
