Brush High School hockey player dies after trouble breathing at practice

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A Brush High School hockey player died suddenly Tuesday night after he had trouble breathing during practice in Cleveland Heights.

Alec Kornet, 17, died after paramedics took him to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital for treatment, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The medical examiner's office has not released the cause of death.

Paramedics took Alec to the hospital just after 7:30 p.m. after he had trouble breathing during practice at the Cleveland Heights Recreation Pavilion on Monticello Boulevard, the Cleveland Heights Fire Department said.

Alec, a junior, was an honor student who was a member of the school's band and its soccer, hockey and baseball teams, the the South Euclid-Lyndhurst City School District said in a statement.

"Alec was an incredibly well-liked and well-respected student by his fellow classmates," school officials said in the statement. "The [South Euclid-Lyndhurst] Schools are deeply saddened by his death, and extend our deepest sympathy to the Kornet family."

Grief counselors will be available to students and staff at Brush High School.
