Cuyahoga County's majestic showpiece explored

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Just south of Browns Stadium and a short jog east sits an architectural gem. Completed in 1912, the "Old Courthouse" exemplifies  the neoclassical courthouses that sprang up at the turn of the 20th Century.

The official name of the building is the Lakeside Courthouse, which is adorned with more than a dozen statues and several murals. The beauty of the edifice is in the details - the rolling white marble staircase, ornate hand-cut marble arches, hand-carved wood trim and stained-glass windows.

The 300,000-square-foot structure cost $5 million to build. Cuyahoga County has spent millions more to restore and maintain it over the years. It houses the 8th Ohio District Court of Appeals and county's Probate and Domestic Relations courts, as well as several other judicial offices.

The lobby is a popular wedding venue.

County officials opened the building to a cleveland.com photographer last Saturday.
