De Blasio urges New Yorkers to stay off the roads

Mayor de Blasio said on Thursday the city has about 2,300 vehicles plowing and encouraged people to use mass transit so the trucks can continue to clear the streets of snow.

He said the Department of Sanitation is “off to a strong start,” adding they’re “dealing with usual intense conditions.”

In the past two hours, de Blasio said, snowfall was measured at LaGuardia Airport falling at about three inches per hour and “that is unusual.”

He said he expects the city to get hit with as much as 14 inches of snow, but the storm is expected to end by around 6 p.m.

De Blasio urged people to take buses and subways instead because cars get stranded and block vehicles trying to clear the streets.

“Don’t drive you car today, it’s really simple, get off the streets,” he said.

He also said alternate side parking has been suspended through Saturday and that schools are expected to open again on Friday.

He encouraged people who have problems with heat or hot water to call 311 and urged people to check on their neighbors, especially senior citizens and those with health problems.

The mayor said they will continue to monitor streets throughout the day because of the intense snowfall.

“We’re coming back around over and over again,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.
