Fiancé of Korryn Gaines acquitted of drug charges

A Baltimore County jury on Thursday acquitted the fiancé of Korryn Gaines of all charges in a drug case against him.

Police said they found 75 capsules of heroin hidden on top of a kitchen cabinet after Gaines, 23, was shot and killed by a tactical officer in an hours-long standoff at her Randallstown apartment.

Her fiancé, Kareem Courtney, 39, faced charges of possession of heroin and possession with intent to distribute.

A detective searching Gaines' home after the police shooting said he found the drugs in a black plastic bag.

In closing arguments Thursday, defense attorney J. Wyndal Gordon suggested that the drug charges were a "distraction" from the controversial police shooting.

"All of a sudden, Korryn Gaines is dead under questionable circumstances and then we find this bag of dope," he said. "I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but is there a cover-up at play?"

Gordon said Courtney did not live in the home and that there was no evidence he knew about the drugs.
