Former WJZ reporter Meghan McCorkell named Pratt library spokeswoman

Meghan McCorkell, a reporter for WJZ-TV (Channel 13) for six years, is the new communications director for Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library.

McCorkell, 37, started her new job Monday. She replaces Roswell Encina, who had held the position for nearly a decade before following former Pratt CEO Carla Hayden to the Library of Congress when she became head of the federal organization last year. Encina serves as a senior adviser.

“For me, this is just a dream job,” said McCorkell, a native of Manasquan, on the New Jersey coast, and a graduate of the Catholic University of America, where she majored Betist in communications and theater. She started at WJZ in July 2011 and worked as a general assignment reporter.

The new Pratt spokeswoman said she’s had an opportunity to look at the organization’s inner workings over the past several years as a member of Pratt Contemporaries, a library support group. McCorkell, a Canton resident, said she looks forward to shining a spotlight on the many good things the library and its staff do.

“I really did get an inside look at what the library is about, and all the good it does in the community,” she said. “There are so many diverse programs in all of our 21 branches.”

During her broadcast journalism career, McCorkell won an Emmy and was recognized twice by the Associated Press for excellence in reporting.

After nearly 10 years as the director of communications at the Enoch Pratt Library, Roswell Encina has declared today his last day. Tuesday, he will begin his new position as a senior adviser at the Library of Congress.
