Formerly conjoined twins celebrate first birthday

A formerly conjoined set of twins that were separated during a marathon surgery at a Westchester hospital celebrated their first birthday over the weekend.

Ballenie and Bellanie Camacho’s hospital room at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital was transformed into a party palace Saturday for their birthday.

Hospital staff brought balloons, birthday signs, cake and even princess crowns for the little girls, who were attached at the lower back up until last month.

A crew of surgeons performed a 21-hour procedure the started on Jan. 17 and ended the following day that successfully separated the sisters.

Many of the doctors involved in the surgery, including Dr. Whitney McBride, stopped by to celebrate with the twins and their parents.

Once the girls are fully recovered, their parents plan to take them back to the Dominican Republic, where they were born, to be reunited with their older siblings.
