CLEVELAND, Ohio -- While Donald Trump has had an interesting, if not tumultuous start to his presidency, his place in history is yet to be written.

Will he rank among the best presidents or the worst presidents the nation has seen?

Ultimately, time will tell where Trump will land in C-Span's rankings of United States presidents.  In their latest survey, released in time for Presidents Day, C-Span asked 91 presidential historians to rank each of the previous chief executives based on nine characteristics, including crisis leadership, moral authority, relations with Congress, vision and pursuit of equal justice for all.

In his first appearance on the rankings, former President Barack Obama ranked pretty high, at No. 12. His predecessor, George W. Bush, is further down the list, at No. 33, though that's up three spots since the last survey, done in 2009.

"The golden age of the American presidency, according to this survey, is 1933-1969. Five presidents from this era each rank in the top ten which tells you something about the criteria that historians tend to use," American historian and C-Span panel member Richard Norton Smith said in a release. "It reinforces Franklin Roosevelt's claim to be not only the first modern president but the man who, in reinventing the office, also established the criteria by which we judge our leaders."

The worst president in U.S. history? James Buchanan had held that distinction in each survey C-Span has done.
