Man accused of fatally shooting Painesville man dumped in Cleveland driveway

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland man is accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old man during a robbery, then dumping his body in a driveway in North Collinwood.

Anthony Cook, 41, is charged with aggravated murder. He is not in police custody and a warrant was issued Wednesday for his arrest.

Cook is accused of fatally shooting Travonta Smith, 19, of Painesville.

The shooting happened about 12:15 p.m. Friday on East 175th Street near Villaview Avenue, according to court records. Court records do not detail the circumstances surrounding the shooting, only that it was during a robbery.

Witnesses told police a man then drove to a home on Damon Avenue, near East 156th Street.

He grabbed Smith by the feet and dragged him from his car, according to police reports. He dropped Smith on the ground, got in his car and sped off, police reports say.

Police found Smith with a gunshot wound to his right ear and head. He was taken to University Hospitals, where he died.

Cook's criminal history includes a 2009 conviction for drug trafficking. He has prior convictions for breaking and entering, attempted theft and drug possession.
