No signs yet of Trump's sanctuary city order impacting Boulder

Boulder has not been contacted by the White House or any federal government officials concerning its status as an immigration "sanctuary," city spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said.

President Donald Trump professed during his campaign, then formalized in a Jan. 25 executive order, a desire to strip federal funds from sanctuary cities such as Boulder, but officials report no changes since then.

The order involved a plan to publish weekly lists of crime committed by undocumented people in sanctuary jurisdictions. Trump also plans to restart the Secure Communities program, designed to give municipalities greater power to enforce immigration laws. The Obama White House previously nixed the program amid concerns it was being abused.

While Boulder waits to see whether the threatened enforcement will ever begin, it's keeping watch on developments in other sanctuary cities.

Most notably, San Francisco last week became the first American city to file a lawsuit challenging Trump's executive order targeting sanctuaries. The suit alleges Trump has attempted to exceed his power and has proposed unconstitutional measures.

Boulder has no plans to take similar action.

Huntley added that, "part of what we'll be watching for now is how the president's order might be implemented and how Congress responds.

"Until we get a better sense of both those things, it's premature to speculate about how we could be impacted."

The city attorney's office also was not aware as of midday Monday of any Boulder employees directly impacted by Trump's now-halted executive order on immigration.
