AKRON, Ohio - The St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Russia's oldest symphony orchestra, will perform at the E.J. Thomas Hall March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The concert, which will feature Tuesday Musical's 2017 Margaret Baxtresser Pianist pianist Nikolai Lugansky and be conducted by Nikolay Alexeev, will include Brahm's "Piano Concerto No. 1" and Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 10." Pianist Caroline Oltmanns will give the 6:30 p.m. concert talk.

"We play with our hearts," said concertmaster Lev Klychkov, in a release.

In addition to performing in Akron, Lugansky will perform with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wiener Symphoniker, as well as with the Orchestre National de France, Philadelphia Orchestra, St Louis Symphony and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony. 

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic, which formed in 1882, was first known as the "Imperial Music Choir." Notable philmarmonic conductors have included Richard Strauss, Alexander Glazunov and Lorin Maazel, along with soloists Van Cliburn, Vladimir Horowitz and Sergei Prokofiev.

The Gertrude F. Orr Trust Advised Fund of Akron Community Foundation is sponsoring the event.
