Store employee's car tire slashed by former girlfriend: Cleveland Heights police blotter

Criminal damage, Mayfield Road: At 6:45 p.m. Feb. 2,  police were called to the BP gas station at 3983 Mayfield Road. There, a male employee, 21, said he was working when a customer told him that a car in the lot had just had a tire slashed. The customer described the woman who slashed the tire, and who then ran back into a van that was driven from the scene.

The description matched that of the employee's former girlfriend. The girlfriend and her female friend had been in the BP convenience store minutes earlier wanting to talk to the employee about personal matters. The employee told the women he was too busy to talk.

A portion of the incident was captured on the store's surveillance camera. Police were unable to immediately speak with the suspect.

Theft, Mayfield Road: At 8:20 a.m. Feb. 2, police received a theft report from Dave's Supermarket, 3628 Mayfield Road. The suspects, police were told, had left the scene in a car.

Police stopped the car on North Taylor Road. Three people were found in the vehicle. A male passenger in the car, it was found, had tried to steal items from Dave's but turned over the goods to store employees before he could leave.

The woman sitting in the back seat possessed two bags of Dave's merchandise. The woman, 43, told police she was given the merchandise by a relative and didn't know it was stolen.

Police found that the woman was wanted on a theft warrant in Cleveland Heights, and a grand theft warrant issued by the county's sheriff's office. The woman was charged with theft and she and the man were told not to return to Dave's. The car's driver was not charged.

OVI, Noble Road: At 3:05 a.m. Feb. 4, an officer used radar to determine a van was traveling 53 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. The officer activated his car's sirens and overhead lights and attempted to make a traffic stop. The van, at first, sped up before eventually stopping.

The driver, 39, was ordered out of the van and did not comply with police orders to get on his knees. When the officer attempted to handcuff him, the man resisted and had to physically be taken to the ground.

The man was found to be intoxicated. In the van, officers found marijuana and an open bottle of alcohol.

The van was towed and the man was cited for speeding, OVI, open container and possession of a controlled substance. The man was taken to the hospital after he complained of knee pain due to being taken to the ground by the officer.

Disorderly conduct, Mayfield Road: At 1:50 p.m. Feb. 3, an employee of Metro PCS, 3965 Mayfield Road, reported that a drunk man was in the store. Through slurred speech, the man said he was trying to buy headphones. The man, 54, was in the store nearly four hours earlier, arguing with customers.

Police found two cans of unopened beer in a bag the man held. He said he had been drinking at home. The man was charged with disorderly conduct/intoxication.

Theft from auto, Somerton Road: At 5:05 p.m. Feb. 2, a man reported that someone had entered his unlocked car during the previous evening and stole $7 in change. The car was parked at the time in the man's driveway.

Simple assault, Nelaview Road: At 4:30 a.m. Feb. 2, a woman whispered as she called 911 asking for police help. Police arrived to find the woman crying and shaking uncontrollably and immediately detained at the house the man whom she has been seeing the past eight months.

The woman said the man had choked her and that, in the past, he gave her a black eye. The man, 33, was arrested and charged with domestic violence/assault.

Burglary, Clarence Road: A woman and her son returned home at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 7 after having been away for more than five hours and found that someone had broken into their home. Entry was made by pushing in a window air conditioner in a first-floor window. The burglar stole $600 cash and four pairs of shoes from a second-floor bedroom.

Police were able to get DNA swabs from three locations in the house and are investigating the matter.

Aggravated menacing, East Overlook Road: On Feb. 7, police were called to a home where a woman reported that she had been threatened by the father of her child.

The woman said the man, 28, has, in the past, physically assaulted her and pointed a gun at her. On Feb. 7, the man called to make several threats, including one in which he said, "I will shoot you and your house up."

Police are investigating.

Disorderly conduct, Cedar Road:  At 6:15 p.m. Feb. 4, police were called to a home where a disturbance took place involving a father and his children. A passer-by heard yelling coming from inside the house and called police.

Inside, police found an intoxicated man. His young children were afraid because their father had been drinking heavily and was screaming. Police found a bedroom door off a hinge and were told that the man knocked down the door while looking for a credit card.

Further, the man had a bandaged hand. He told officers that he injured the hand by punching a front door window. During this prior incident, police had taken the man to the hospital and cited him for voluntary intoxication.

Police again arrested the man for voluntary intoxication on Feb. 4.

On the way to the police station, the man informed police that he had a bag of marijuana in his sock, which led to an additional charge.
