Temperature reaches 70 degrees at O'Hare, shattering 36-year record

A 36-year-old weather record was shattered Saturday as the high temperature reached 70 degrees at O'Hare International Airport.

A previous high of 62 set the record on Feb. 18, 1981.

Meteorologists say the "unseasonably warm" temperatures that landed in the area Friday will likely stick around through Friday, possibly breaking more records along the way.

"Quite simply, we've had an overall warmer weather pattern that has allowed for this warm air to push further north than we typically see," said National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Rodriguez. "And we're not seeing any weather systems that will be pushing the warm out of here at least for the next week."

Sunday's weather is expected to be similar to Saturday's with highs in the low to mid-60s. Highs in the upper 50s to low 60s are predicted to continue through Friday with our first look at freezing temperatures returning for the first time Friday night,

Lisle resident Shelly Rokita took advantage of the near 70-degree temps Saturday by taking her two children and dogs for a walk.

"We've been really lucky, weather-wise, since the holidays but the dogs have particularly loved these past few days," she said. "I hope we don't pay for it with a cold summer."
