Woman shoots, kills man attacking officer in Indiana

RISING SUN, Indiana -- A woman who saw an Indiana conservation officer in a struggle with a man shot and killed the suspect with her own firearm, reports say.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, the confrontation occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Monday after the conservation officer responded to a report of a suspicious person.

The officer found the suspect, Justin K. Holland, 32, of Moores Hill, Ind., near a vehicle on State Road 56 near Rising Sun.

State police say Holland began fighting with the officer. The woman, who lives in a nearby residence, could see Holland was overtaking the officer, the news release says.

The woman fired a single shot from her own firearm, hitting Holland in the body. Holland died of his wound at Dearborn County Hospital. The officer was injured in the fight and was treated at the hospital, police say.

The identities of the officer and the woman were not released.

The incident remains under investigation.

Rising Sun is located along the Ohio River, about 35 miles southwest of Cincinnati. It has a population of just over 2,200 people.
