ALBANY — Groups supporting Planned Parenthood said more than 1,000 people have signed up to attend a rally for the reproductive health organization in Albany Saturday.

The event began at 2:30 p.m. at the Planned Parenthood on Central Avenue.

Organizers say it is planned as a response to national anti-Planned Parenthood protests.

"These protests are designed to intimidate the many patients who seek basic health care services from Planned Parenthood, including lifesaving cancer screenings, testing for HIV, treatment for STIs, and family planning and birth control," said Chelly Hegan, president of Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood. "At Planned Parenthood health centers, our nurses, doctors and staff work tirelessly to ensure that women and families are always able to access affordable, high-quality health care in a safe and caring environment. That's what we're focused on today and every day."

Speakers at the event will include Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and state Assemblywoman Pat Fahy.
