PRESS RELEASE: Huawei Says Industry Cooperation Is Necessary To Accelerate 5G Prosperity

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei Carrier BG CEO Li Peng today delivered a speech at MWCBarcelona 2023 on reimagining the 5G business, strengthening 5G coverage and reinventing of 5G technologies. In his speech, Li shared his views on user experience and the recent development of 5G. He stated that the industry must work together to accelerate the prosperity of 5G.

Accelerating 5G prosperity with non-stop innovation

5G has developed rapidly since it began to be used commercially three years ago. By the end of 2022, more than a billion 5G users had watched HD broadcasts of major international sporting events, and more than 10 million households had access to 5G broadband. "5G has only needed three years to achieve the breakthroughs that 4G achieved in five years. From this perspective, 5G has already achieved success," Li said.

However, 5G coverage remains unbalanced across regions and countries. Some consumers expect a better 5G experience, while the digitization of the industry demands more from 5G. "To make 5G more successful, the industry needs to reimagine the 5G business, strengthen 5G coverage, and reinvent 5G technologies," Li said.

Reimagining 5G business to drive experience-focused innovation

The true value of 5G lies in people's natural desire for better experiences. According to a recent study, the dopamine produced by the human brain from watching a three-minute high-definition video is equivalent to that produced by a 30-minute run.

As 5G network capabilities improve, users can view videos in higher definition and from more vantage points, creating a new standard for next-generation experiences. 70% of users are already willing to pay for better 5G experiences. This means that operators can adopt the network-as-a-service (NaaS) model to foster a more thriving ecosystem of 5G applications and content.

With more powerful networks, operators will also be able to expand the domestic and SME markets. There are still 200 million broadband copper lines in dire need of updating worldwide and more than 60 million SMEs want access to leased line services. One European operator has already achieved a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of over 90% and increased its ARPU by more than 60% by offering 5G FWA.

Strengthen 5G coverage to offer better experiences to more users

Deeper 5G coverage is helping carriers to better monetize the experience. Proof of this are the top 20 operators in the world in deployment of 5G networks, which last year achieved ARPU and revenue growth significantly above the world average.

Global carriers are thinking more about how to extend 5G coverage from outdoors to indoors and from urban to suburban to rural areas. By increasing the coverage of 5G base stations and allowing 5G signals to penetrate more walls and buildings, they can help more users enjoy better experiences.

Reinventing 5G technologies to achieve new advances in capacity and network coverage

It would also require innovation in 5G base station equipment to offer deeper coverage. In this vein, Huawei launched MetaAAU, its third-generation AAU for 5G base stations, in 2022. Compared to its previous generation counterpart, MetaAAU offers 30% more capacity and coverage, making it the best choice for carriers looking for deeper 5G coverage.

This year, Huawei has also launched its Meta BladeAAU, which enables easy deployment of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks on a single pole.

From 5G to 5.5G: 10 times more capabilities for 100 times more opportunities

Looking ahead, major carriers are working closely with 3GPP to advance the 5G standard and jump to 5.5G.

5.5G will extend 5G, but it will be faster, more automated, and smarter than 5G, and will support more frequency bands.

5.5G will offer 10 times greater network capacities, which will translate into 100 times more opportunities. Point-of-view video, enterprise cloudification, mobile private networks, passive IoT, and integrated sensing and communication will all rapidly develop thanks to these advances in 5G.

At the end of his speech, Li stressed that all industry partners will need to work together and innovate non-stop to accelerate this leap to 5G prosperity.

MWC Barcelona 2023 takes place from February 27 to March 2 in Barcelona, Spain. Huawei presents its products and solutions at stand 1H50 in Hall 1 of Fira Gran Vía. Together with global operators, industry professionals and opinion leaders, we delve into topics such as 5G business success, 5.5G opportunities, development green, digital transformation and our vision to use the GUIDE business model to lay the foundation for 5.5G and build on the success of 5G for even greater prosperity.
