LONDON, May 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles-based restaurant Kato, led by chef Jon Yao and sommelier and director of operations Ryan Bailey, today receives the Resy One To Watch Award 2024 from The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2024. The award recognizes a rising star restaurant that is making waves on the dining scene and is worthy of international recognition.
Yao, a Taiwanese-American chef, first opened Kato in 2016 in a nondescript West Los Angeles shopping center and serves a tasting menu that encompasses Asian-American cuisine, heavily influenced by his mother's Taiwanese cooking. In early 2022, Yao and Bailey moved Kato to a new, larger, fully licensed location at ROW DTLA in Los Angeles' Arts District, promoting veteran general manager Nikki Reginaldo to managing partner and bringing in seasoned bar manager Austin Hennelly in the process.
The luxurious industrial-style restaurant is home to a new take on fine dining, with Yao's dishes incorporating the essence of classic Taiwanese cuisine with a distinctive contemporary twist. An artisanal wood-burning fireplace and grill complement the kitchen, which serves a tasting menu of 12 standout dishes, including caramelized black cod with abalone and basil, grilled lobster with lobster toast and roasted shell sauce, and Dungeness crab custard with fish maw and crab vinegar. Sweet options include dishes like sweet potato boba with fresh cheese and sablé, as well as roasted Taiwanese pineapple millefeuille. The menu speaks to Yao and his team's unwavering vision of elevating Taiwanese cuisine and educating Los Angeles diners about its countless merits.
