Appeals court upholds murder sentence of man who used pipe to beat another

A man challenging his murder sentence had his appeal dismissed Friday, according to court documents.

In his claim, Victor Marrero, 31, said his arrest was illegal and that his statements to police should have been suppressed. He also claimed that his lawyers did not properly defend him.

The court upheld Marrero's sentence on Friday, saying it was not persuaded by his arguments and that his lawyers' defense was "vigorously conducted."

Marrero was convicted of murdering Roberto Feliciano, of Atlantic City, in 2006 by beating him with a pipe while another man, Robin Perez, 27, stabbed him 44 times with a knife, the documents said.

Marrero was tried by a jury and later sentenced to 49 years in prison.
