Lawrence man charged with shooting man during robbery

TRENTON -- A Lawrence man is facing charges he shot a man in the arm and leg while trying to rob him last week, police said.

Vonzell Kelley, 29

Vonzell Kelley, 29, was charged with robbery, aggravated assault and weapons offenses. He was arrested by a U.S. Marshals task force Friday in Burlington.

The shooting occurred Feb. 14. Police say the 38-year-old man was sitting in his car when a suspect opened his passenger-side door and tried to rob him at gunpoint. The man tried to grab the gun, but the suspect fired, hitting him in the arm and knee, police said.

The man then fled the car back to his home, where a family member drove him to the hospital. He was treated for gunshot wounds, police said.

Following an investigation by the Shooting Response Team, a warrant was issued for Kelley's arrest.

Kelley was charged last summer with fleeing from police during a traffic stop, nearly hitting an officer and drug possession. Police found 80 decks of heroin, 3 grams of cocaine, two opioid pills and $265 in suspected drug proceeds on him.

In 2008, Kelley, who previously lived in Princeton, was sentenced to four years in prison on robbery and assault convictions.
