JERSEY CITY -- Two Jersey City felons have been charged with weapons offenses related to a pair of handguns, including one who was arrested in 2015 after shooting himself in the leg with what he called "a big ass revolver."

Tariq S. Gathers, 20, of Belmont Avenue, and Markell Brown, 28, of Bostwick Avenue, were arrested Wednesday and charged with numerous weapons offenses related to the two Taurus handguns, including two counts each on the charge of possession of a weapon by a felon, the criminal complaints state.

The pair made their first court appearance on the new gun charges Wednesday in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City. At the hearing, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Travers moved to have the pair detained pending trial. Each is scheduled for a detention hearing Monday before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City.

Gathers was in the news in August 2015 for what he told police was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers responding to a report of a man shot at Clinton Avenue and Sackett Street received a radio transmission saying a large revolver had been recovered at the intersection and that a man with a gunshot wound had been dropped off at the Jersey City Medical Center, an official said at the time.

At the hospital, police officers found Gathers with a bullet hole in the lower left leg, authorities said at the time.

"So I shot myself. That ain't no charge," he told the officers, according to a police report from the incident.

Gathers told the officers that after he shot himself he dropped the gun. When asked to describe the weapon, he said: "I don't know, it was a big ass revolver and it went off," the police report stated.

Earlier in 2015 Gathers was convicted of drug possession and sentenced to two years probation. Shortly before shooting himself he was arrested again and charged with employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime and numerous drug offenses related to suspected heroin and cocaine.
