TRENTON -- A New Jersey teacher was arrested in Florida Tuesday after a State Police investigation found he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a teenaged student, authorities said.

William J. Jacobs, 32, is also accused of urging his 17-year-old female victim not to cooperate with investigators, police said in a statement.

Jacobs, of Folsom, is a physical education teacher for Buena Regional High School in Atlantic County, according to public payroll records. Authorities say the school district cooperated in the investigation.

Authorities claim Jacobs sexually abused the student "on more than one occasion," and investigators found "several hundred" electronic messages exchanged between the two.

He was arrested by U.S. Marshalls in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday morning. A State Police spokesman would not say what he was doing in Florida at the time.

Jacobs faces charges of official misconduct, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with a witness and obstruction of justice.

He was being held Tuesday at the Broward County Correctional Facility in Florida awaiting extradition.

A spokesman for the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, which is handling the case, said Jacobs had not yet retained an attorney.
