City must commit to funding school pools, Feb. 15

Robin Pilkey’s appeal to Mayor John Tory through the Star’s op-ed piece is an insult to the taxpayers of this city and displays ingratitude and arrogance.

The chair of the Toronto District School Board should know that Toronto taxpayers contribute $1.5 billion a year to the TDSB in direct funding from property taxes. The municipal contribution from our property taxes is to cover capital items such as swimming pools. Ms. Pilkey should also know that education is a provincial responsibility.

If the TDSB has blown the $1.5 billion a year on items or operations that these funds were not intended to cover, municipal taxpayers are not obligated to cough up more money or to sacrifice municipal projects or municipal service standards in order to further subsidize financial irresponsibility at the TDSB.

If Mayor Tory wishes to divert more of our municipal revenues toward provincial mandates, he should take a seat at Queen’s Park.
