In Vietnamese Mekong, Typhoons are rare, now the region is preparing for Cyclone Tembin. Previously, he caused serious damage to the Philippines.

Vietnam: Hundreds of thousands fleeing from Typhoon Tembin

In Vietnam hundreds of thousands of people prepare for arrival of typhoon Tembin. In region around Mekong in south of country, many people were brought to safety. Meteorologists expected first foothills of cyclone to hit land on Monday evening (local time). In town of Rịa Tàu, according to a report by broadcaster VTV, thousands of fishermen returned ashore with ir boats. In Mekong, Typhoons are rare.

Previously, storm had raged in Philippines. According to country's civil protection authority, at least 240 people were killed. Many more are still missing. In sourn part of country, tens of thousands of people had to spend ir first Christmas holiday in temporary shelters. Tembin had raised floods and landslides in provinces of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur on peninsula of Zamboanga.

The typhoon had reached speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on Saturday according to official information. Individual gusts came 145 kilometers per hour.

In his Christmas message in St. Peter's Square in Rome, Pope Francis referred to numerous victims and destruction that Tembin caused. He wanted to assure people of Mindanao that he would include m in his prayers, said head of Catholic Church.
