Susan L. Kinnan, 57, and her husband, John, where struck by a car Feb. 15 while cycling in Franklin Township.

Kinnan died Monday, a family friend said. Her 62-year-old husband was also injured in the crash, but was released from the hospital.

The driver, Emilio Ortega III, 41, of Monroeville, was charged with two counts of assault by auto and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

The Kinnans were riding their bikes on the southbound shoulder of Delsea Drive around 2 p.m. when they were struck.

Ortega stopped at the scene, police said.

Friends of the Kinnans shared fond memories of Susan Kinnan, recalling her as an inspiration. Some shared photos of the couple biking, kayaking and exploring the outdoors.

Family friend Stephen Walters said Susan, who worked as a nurse, had a zest for life.

"She just loved people and everything she did and just made everybody feel wonderful," he said.

The Kinnan's are active church members at Ramoth Church in Vineland.

The couple's love of bicycle riding dovetailed with their love of helping others, Walters said, as they took long bike journeys to raise funds for church causes.

The Kinnans married later in life and were a devoted couple, he said.

A photo on her Facebook page shows her with her husband stopped along the side of a roadway in their biking gear. The caption on the image says, "I love us."

"They were the love of each other's life," Walters said. "I can attest to that."

Funeral services are planned for Sunday at Ramoth, with a viewing from 3 to 6 p.m. followed by a service.

Walters said John Kinnan is recovering from the crash as he tries to come to terms with his loss, Walters said.

"His faith is very strong, as was hers," he said. "They know that they will be together for eternity. That's what we as Christians believe."
