Cheerleader with disabilities honored during H.S. Senior Night

GLEN GARDNER - Voorhees High School senior Kelly Krupa, a student with disabilities who is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, was recognized by the school's Varsity Girls Basketball Game during a recent game.

"Our daughter enjoyed being a part of a high school sports team," said Laura Krupa, her mother. "She felt good about herself in uniform, learning something new, and forming friendships that may never have been possible.

"It gave her, and us, an opportunity to experience high school sports at a level we didn't think was possible."

Kelly Krupa was honored during Senior Night along with other senior athletes and managers from the basketball team and cheerleading squad during a Feb. 7 game against Phillipsburg High School.

According to the school, Kelly Krupa, who has been on the Varsity Cheerleading squad for two years, had the support and guidance of the school's special education staff, her Cheerleading Coach Kaitlyn Escott, and teammates.

She memorized cheers, learned how to be an active team member, developed meaningful friendships, and demonstrated a high level of comfort while center-court cheering on the home team - something that can be difficult for any high school student, the school stated in a news release.

"It has been a true pleasure to watch Kelly grow into the independent, vibrant, and wonderful young woman she is today," said Kelly Anne Kieffer, supervisor of Special Education at Voorhees High School. "A true testament to her family, and to the amazing staff that works with her at Voorhees. She has made incredible strides in her overall high school experience, starting as a reserved and quiet student, to one who now thrives in the high school social 'scene.'

"Kelly is an excellent student, fantastic friend, and a valued member of the Varsity Cheerleading team. Without doubt, Kelly will leave a lasting impression on many, and be truly missed, as she graduates from Voorhees this spring."
