Though exact numbers are difficult to pin down, the number of 2017 Fiesta medals currently in circulation — two months out from the first official crack of a cascarón — is estimated in the gazillions.

Already, various Fiesta organizations and avid medal collecting groups have met for unveilings, sales and swaps. Before long, the clanging will be heard.

Although many individuals, groups and institutions are still awaiting their shipments of Fiesta trinkets, the San Antonio Express-News Fiesta Medal Contest has set a deadline for entries in this year’s contest.

Your hardware is requested by March 27.

As in other years, the 2017 contest, which is focused on mass-produced manufactured medals, will be judged on design and production quality.

It’s a beauty contest, for sure, but judges will consider originality and the messages captured by your Fiesta collectibles.

Judging will not consider whether medals are sold or given away. Both are welcome.

Photos of medals will not be accepted. All medals submitted will appear on an online slideshow.

Medals will compete in various categories, including:

Official Fiesta royals

Unofficial royals

Fiesta events

Nonprofits

Military

Government

Politicos

Churches/religious

Schools/education

Businesses

Restaurants/bars

Sports

Animals

Media

Individuals/families

Celebrities

Include the following information with your entries: contact name, phone number, email address, name of organization or business, if applicable, cost of medal and where it’s being sold, including online; and any information pertinent to your entry.

Send entries to Fiesta Medal Contest, c/o Elaine Ayala, San Antonio Express-News, P.O. Box 2171, San Antonio, TX 7829-2171. For questions, contact eayala@express-news.net or 210-250-3402.

You can drop off entries at the Express-News main building at the corner of Avenue E and Third Street, a block north of the Alamo, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
