Heavy overnight rain tonight into Tuesday may bring more than 3 inches to the Sonoma County hills, along with gusting winds, according to forecasts.

It’s the latest pounding and wind event by yet another atmospheric river of wet weather to pass overhead, adding to rainfall totals already exceeding what the region would usually get for a whole year.

This morning was gray and somewhat damp, but it was a break between storms.

Sunday’s rainfall brought nearly 3 inches to the county’s wettest areas, with 2.8 inches recorded in the hills west of Healdsburg. In Santa Rosa, just over .5 inches fell downtown and .65 inches fell at the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

Slightly higher amounts were expected from the coming storm. Along with more than 3 inches in the hills, 1½-2 inches could fall in Santa Rosa, said Steve Anderson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Monterey.

A flash flood watch also has been issued for the North Bay.

“It could be heavy enough to cause problems along creeks and rivers,” Anderson said.

Water, weather and river calculations show the Russian River could crest at 30 feet Wednesday morning in Guerneville, where flooding starts at 32 feet.

A wind advisory has been issued for the North Bay with winds of 15-20 mph, gusting to 35 mph.

The storm should move along Wednesday.

“Then another cold front, a quick mover, comes through Thursday with showers into Friday, then dry for the weekend. Perfect timing this time,” Anderson said, referencing complaints about weekend rain.
