NJSIAA district wrestling: crowns for Del Val, North Hunterdon, Voorhees

Delaware Valley crowned four individual champions and walked off with the team title in the Terriers’ first trip to the District 19 wrestling tournament at Old Bridge Saturday.

Del Val seniors Connor Mills (132 pounds), Matt Kolonia (138) and Rhys Zigich (145) and junior Kyle Lightner (220) won championships and the Terriers advanced nine wrestlers total to next week’s Region 5 tournament at Hunterdon Central.

The Terriers, who were without sophomore standout AJ DeRosa at 120 pounds due to illness, piled up 189.5 team points to outclass Edison at 145 and St. John Vianney at 144.5.

Also moving on to regionals for Del Val was senior Dylan Uderman (third at 106), sophomore Tommy Schlittler (third at 113), senior Chase Bauberger (third at 160), junior Eli Kalfaian (second at 220) and senior Josh LaDuca (third at 285).

District 11

Belvidere sophomore Quinn Melofchik won the 106-pound title as the County Seaters advanced four wrestlers overall from the event at Morristown Saturday to next week’s Region 3 tournament at West Orange.

Melofchik, ranked No. 4 at 106 by lehighvalleylive, tamed Queen of Peace’s Will Grater 4-0 in his final.

Also moving on for Belvidere, which finished fourth as a team with 100 points (Queen of Peace won at 228.5) are seniors Nick Cassidy (second at 138) and Nick Appleby (third at 170) and junior Ryan Kokawski (third at 182).

District 15

North Hunterdon put six wrestlers on top of the podium as the Lions took the team title at the event at Westfield Saturday.

North Hunterdon scored 193.5 team points to top the hosts at 172 and Roselle Park at 167.5.

Individual champions for the Lions were junior Andrew Gapas (132), junior William Hughes (138), junior Tucker Kirchberger (145; he became North Hunterdon's 200th district champion), senior Cole Marra (152), senior Nick Luberto (160) and senior Charlie Tordik (285).

Lions also qualifying for next week’s Region 4 tournament at Union were sophomore Connor Robinson (second at 106), sophomore Michael Wilson (second at 126), and junior Yousef Abbas (second at 195)

District 16

Voorhees held off Watchung Hills to take the team title in its first visit to Millburn for the District 16 tournament Saturday.

The Vikings finished with 190 points to Watchung Hills’ 179.

Voorhees crowned four individual champions – sophomore Aidan Taylor (106), sophomore Colby Koshinski (113), senior Michael Fernandes (170), and sophomore Sam Huff (285).

Also qualifying for next week’s Region 4 tournament at Union were sophomore Hunter Rinehart (second at 120), senior Liam Cutri-French (third at 138), junior Scott Fernandes (second at 182), and sophomore Lewis Fernandes (second at 195).

District 1

Junior 285-pounder Joey Sprague single-handedly kept North Warren’s season alive as the only Patriot wrestler to advance from Saturday’s event at Ramapo to next week’s Region 1 tournamemt at Bergen County Community College.

Sprague pinned Ridgewood’s Jack Simpson in 5 minutes in the third-place bout to punch his ticket to regionals.

North Warren finished eighth in the team score with 36.5 points.
