A 21-year-old man is dead in San Marcos after a drug deal took a deadly turn Thursday, marking the first homicide for the city this year, according to the city.

Terrance Valentine II was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head Thursday night.

Police responded to the Avenue at San Marcos apartments, 1111 Avalon, shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call about a man who had been shot inside an apartment.

Valentine was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the city of San Marcos.

Several witnesses told police the victim and another man got into an argument during a drug transaction. The argument turned deadly when both men brandished handguns. The victim was shot by the other man, who fled the apartment and has not yet been located by police, the news release said.

The suspect is described as a black male about 6 feet tall, with light skin and a “fade-type” haircut, according to the news release.

Police do not believe there is a threat to the general public, but this is the city’s first homicide of 2017.

A representative at the apartment complex confirmed the tenants at the complex are primarily students, but said they lease to all interested renters.

Valentine was not a student at Texas State, according to a university spokesperson.
