American Airlines now offering basic fares on 10 routes, report says

American Airlines is the latest carrier to offer travelers a discounted, no-frills fare, NBC News reported.

The airline started offering the basic economy fares on Tuesday for 10 routes, according to the report.

The new basic economy seats will be available on:

  • New Orleans to Philadelphia
  • Orlando to Charlotte
  • Charlotte to Philadelphia
  • Miami to Philadelphia
  • Dallas-Fort Worth to Philadelphia
  • Dallas-Fort Worth to Tampa
  • Baltimore-Washington to Dallas-Fort Worth
  • Miami to Tampa
  • Fort Lauderdale to Philadelphia
  • Miami to New Orleans

The no frills fare for a flight between Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale during the first week of the offering is about $40 cheaper than the regular economy ticket. The discount is about the same for a flight between Charlotte and Philadelphia.

Under the new basic fare, seats will be assigned at check-in and travelers cannot use the overhead bins, meaning carry-ons can only be placed underneath the seat in front. There are also no upgrades and travelers will board in the last group.

There was no indication if the airline planned to expand the offering to other routes.

NBC News said the new American Airlines fares are good for travel beginning March 1.

Last year, United Airlines began offering basic fares to its travelers in order to compete with other airlines like Spirit.
