Egypt: Travel advice extended after arrest of homosexuals

The Foreign Office has adapted travel advice for Egypt. It could not be ruled out that foreign tourists get problems with Egyptian authorities, y should use dating apps, y said in a newly added paragraph of hints.

The office justified step with arrest of numerous alleged homosexuals. Human rights organizations would report that Egyptian authorities also used dating apps to locate members of LGBTI community.

Guests of a concert of a Lebanese band had waved rainbow flag in September. As a result, media and conservative politicians had disarmed mselves, and Egypt's supreme prosecutor ordered an investigation.

Homosexuality officially not banned

Several concert guests were finally arrested, followed by several arrests in following weeks. Reports of beaten-up and personality-infringing physical investigations triggered panic among many gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgenders.

Homosexuality per se is not banned in Egypt, but homosexual acts in public. Often members of LGBT community are imprisoned and condemned for accusations such as "promotion of debauchery". Homosexuality is a taboo in society.
