Body found on McHenry Co. roadside ID'd as missing Chicago man

A body found alongside a McHenry County roadway was identified by authorities Thursday as a Chicago man who had been reporting missing last month.

Excavators found the remains of Lawrence Johnson, 69, Monday afternoon in a muddy field off Illinois Highway 31 in Lake in the Hills.

McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said in a news release that an autopsy "revealed no signs of trauma or any suspicious findings." Hypothermia is believed to have played a role in Johnson's death, based on preliminary findings, Majewski said.

It is unclear when Johnson died. Authorities said his family had reported him missing and endangered on Jan. 26 and said he suffered from memory loss. Crystal Lake police issued an alert about the missing man after he was believed to have been seen on surveillance footage the same day outside a Walmart along Route 31, not far from where his body was later found. In the footage, he was not wearing a jacket or a hat and was on foot, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
