Business creation falls 1.5% in September after eight months of increases

The number of new commercial companies fell 1.5% in September compared to the same month in 2022, reaching a total of 6,735 companies, according to data released this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the decline recorded in September, business creation puts an end to eight consecutive months of year-on-year increases.

For the constitution of the 6,735 companies created last September, just over 278 million euros were subscribed, 30.4% less than in the same month of 2022, while the average capital subscribed, which stood at 41,334 euros, decreased 29.3% year-on-year.

While the creation of companies decreased, the dissolution of companies also decreased in September, 12.9% compared to the same month in 2022, to a total of 1,245. In this way, every day of the month of September 42 companies closed their doors in Spain.

Of the 1,245 companies that closed last September, 78.6% did so voluntarily, 11.5% due to a merger with other companies and the remaining 9.9% for other reasons.

20.3% of the commercial companies that were created in the ninth month of the year were dedicated to commerce and 15.6% to real estate, financial and insurance activities.

Regarding companies dissolved by main economic activity, the highest percentages are in commerce (19.4%) and construction (17.8%).

For its part, the number of commercial companies that increased capital fell by 11.8% in September, to 1,706 companies. The capital subscribed in these increases exceeded 1,099 million euros, 8.7% lower than in September 2022, while the average capital was 644,553 euros, 3.5% more.

In the first nine months of the year, 10.1% more companies have been created than in the same period of 2022. For its part, the number of dissolved companies has decreased by 2.2% until September.

In monthly terms (September over August), the incorporation of new companies rose 1.9%, its lowest increase in a month of September in at least five years, while dissolutions fell 7.7%, less than what they did so in September 2022 (-8.3%).

MADRID AND CATALONIA LEAD THE CREATION OF BUSINESSES

The communities that created the greatest number of companies last September were Madrid (1,519 companies), Catalonia (1,176) and Andalusia, where 1,166 companies were created. The regions that formed the fewest companies in the ninth month of the year were La Rioja (17), Navarra (46) and Extremadura (67).

Ten regions created more companies in September than in the same month of 2022, especially Castilla-La Mancha (35.4%), Castilla y León (33.5%), Cantabria (30.8%), Asturias (25.7% ) and Extremadura (19.6%).

On the other hand, seven communities registered year-on-year decreases, mainly La Rioja, where 54.1% fewer companies were created than in September 2022; Murcia (-21.3%) and Navarra (-13.2%).

Looking at dissolved commercial companies, the communities with the highest number of dissolutions in September 2023 were Madrid (303), Andalusia (229) and Valencian Community (118). On the contrary, the autonomous communities with the fewest dissolved commercial companies were Navarra (7), Cantabria (11) and La Rioja (12).

Eight communities increased their number of business dissolutions last September in an interannual rate, mainly Navarra (40%) and Extremadura (38.5%); another eight reduced it, especially Cantabria (-45%), Castilla-La Mancha (-40%) and Madrid (-36.3%), and only one region, Murcia, did not experience any variation compared to September of the year. past.
