The number of new commercial companies soared by 9.1% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 108,091 companies, the highest number since 2007, when more than 142,000 companies were formed, according to data released this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the rebound registered in 2023, the incorporation of companies returns to positive rates after they fell by 2.1% in 2022. In 2021, after the end of the restrictions associated with the pandemic, they increased by almost 28%, while in 2020, the year of Covid, business creation sank by 15.7%.

For the constitution of the 108,091 companies created in 2023, more than 6,289 million euros were subscribed, which is 21.2% more than in 2022, while the average capital subscribed, which stood at 58,191 euros, increased by 11. 1%.

While the creation of companies increased, in 2023 the dissolution of companies decreased, 5.6% compared to 2022, to a total of 24,764, in contrast to the maximum of more than 26,000 dissolutions reached in 2022.

It is the first time that the disappearance of companies has decreased since 2020, since double-digit growth was recorded in 2022 and 2021.

Of the 24,764 companies that were dissolved in 2023, 82.2% did so voluntarily, 9.9% due to a merger with other companies and the remaining 7.9% for other reasons.

19.2% of the commercial companies that were created last year were dedicated to commerce and 16.9% to real estate, financial and insurance activities. Regarding the dissolved companies by main economic activity, 20.1% belonged to commerce and 15.8% to construction.

For its part, the number of commercial companies that increased capital increased by 1.3% last year, up to 29,424 companies. The capital subscribed in these increases exceeded 21,469 million euros, 8.8% higher than in 2022, while the average capital was 729,649 euros, 7.4% more.

MADRID AND CATALONIA LEAD THE CREATION OF BUSINESSES

The communities that created the greatest number of companies in 2023 were Madrid (24,671 companies), Catalonia (20,646) and Andalusia, where 19,167 companies were created.

The regions that formed the fewest companies last year were La Rioja (415), Cantabria (769) and Navarra (805).

Looking at dissolved commercial companies, the communities with the highest number of dissolutions in 2023 were Madrid (8,244), Andalusia (3,826) and Valencian Community (1,839).

On the contrary, the autonomous communities with the fewest dissolved commercial companies were La Rioja (201), Navarra (261) and Cantabria (268).

In the last month of last year, 7,957 commercial companies were created, 3.7% less than in the same month of 2022, with a subscribed capital that exceeded 692 million (31.1% year-on-year) and an average subscribed capital of 87,002 euros (36.3%).

In December, 2,155 companies increased capital, 15.7% less than in the same month of 2022, and the capital subscribed in these increases decreased by 31%, to 1,665.4 million euros, while the average capital fell by 18%. .2% year-on-year, standing at 772,848 euros.

The number of commercial companies dissolved in December was 2,669, 17.8% less than in the same month of 2022, which represents the disappearance of an average of 86 companies each day of last December.

In monthly values ​​(December 2023 compared to November of the same year), the number of new companies decreased by 14.2%, while the number of dissolved companies increased by 21.3%.
